If you are a meat eater, you NEED to be very clear where your food is coming from. It turns out that Muslim "halal" meat does not have to have labeling as far as the US FDA goes. What is "halal" meat? Here is the Wikipedia definition: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halal
It basically is lawful food under Muslim law. But please read it to gain better understanding for yourself and your family.
Then you have the word "dabihah" which is the term used for the slaughtering of "halal" food. Here is Wikipedia's write-up on "dabihah," which will give you a clearer idea of how this food is sacrificed to an idol, not Yahweh: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dhabihah
Another helpful site, which I was given at the Sukkot conference is this: http://www.zabihah.com/ This is an international website that can give you local grocers that carry halal products. But do not think you are out of the woods yet!
Here is an article about how "halal" foods are going undetected in the US: http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=39442
And here is another article discussing "halal" meats being sold secretly in grocers in the UK/Britain: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1315278/Top-supermarkets-secretly-sell-halal-Sainsburys-Tesco-Waitrose-M-S-dont-tell-meat-ritually-slaughtered.html
Finally, here's a blog posting about "halal" foods: http://www.xerraireart.com/blog/2011/10/08/halal-foods/ and World Net Daily's recent expose: http://www.wnd.com/?pageId=352637
What I found most helpful to start with all this? The http://www.zabihah.com/ website, as you can find out which local grocers, caterers, and restaurants have "halal" meat. It's a start. But please please please read the World Net Daily article, as it is the most recent information I could offer. Personally, I decided to go vegan anyway, but we still should be wise like a serpent, right?
